About Me
Hi! My name is Nick Rowlands. I’m British. I came to Egypt in 2006 as a tour leader. The story of how and why is quite involved, so we’ll leave that for now. I spent two years leading small groups of tourists around Egypt and Jordan, and once to Tunisia. They were fun times, and I learned heaps.
After two years, I’d had enough of tour leading in Egypt. (There are only so many times you can wake up at 3.00 am to go look at old stones.) But I hadn’t had enough of Egypt. I sort of got sucked into the delicious chaos of Cairo, and I’ve lived here ever since.
I currently write for and edit a pocket sized Cairo city guide called The Croc, which covers all aspects of entertainment and going out in Cairo. I am also the Cairo Local Expert (check out the snazzy title!) for NileGuide, which means I look after and update their interactive trip planning guide to Cairo. I do bits and pieces of freelance travel writing for sites such as Trazzler and Matador too. If you’re interested, there’s links to some of my work in the Writing section of the blog.
When I’m not working, I’m usually flitting about the city: people-watching, losing at backgammon, and putting far too much sugar in my tea. I’m also a lazy football player, an inconsistent yoga practitioner, and the sort of ex-juggler that won’t admit he no longer plays with his balls.
